September 15, 2021Updated 5:44 PM EDTA year after making significant changes to its schedule, NASCAR’s 2022 Cup Series calendar features several more, as first reported by The Athletic, including a shakeup in playoff venues, the addition of one racetrack and the elimination of another track’s second date.Homestead-Miami Speedway, which hosted the championship finale for NASCAR’s national divisions from 2002 to 2019, is back on the playoff calendar with a race scheduled for Oct. 23. While Richmond still has two races, they are both during the regular season, in April and August. As The Athletic first reported, the Clash exhibition race will move to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on Feb. 6, two weeks before the Daytona 500.World Wide Technology Raceway’s 1.25-mile oval joins the regular-season calendar on June 5. Losing its second Cup race is Pocono Raceway, ending a two-year doubleheader experiment at a track that’s hosted two Cup races a year since 1982. Additional changes include a March date for the second-ever Cup race at Circuit of The Americas, which saw its first Cup date in May marred by heavy rain and standing water. There is only one week off once the season starts — in June after the Sonoma race. That means the series will race on Easter Sunday for the first time since 1989, when a snowstorm the week after the Daytona 500 forced the series to postpone the Richmond race to Easter (March 26). For the 2021 schedule, NASCAR followed through on a promise to make significant changes from years past, which included the addition of Nashville Superspeedway, running Bristol’s spring weekend on a dirt surface, moving the All-Star Race to Texas Motor Speedway, adding road-course races at Circuit of The Americas and Road America and shifting from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval to its road course layout.(Photo: Sean Gardner / Getty Images)2022 schedule takeawaysThe 2022 NASCAR Cup Series schedule
